FOOD
PHOTOGRAPHY
If you have ever thought about
entering the field of Food photography there is one thing
you must consider, do I have the skill. In Food photography
you must be a highly skilled technician with a thorough working
knowledge of photographic lighting, photographic technique
and the eye of an artist. There is also another little detail
that one should consider and most often is highly overlooked
to be a successful food photographer, you had better be a
successful chef with training. Whether you prepare the food
yourself or you have of a Food Stylist or a Chef at your disposal,
you must be able to communicate what you are thinking and
what you want to see. Remember you are the creator of the
image, you are the director, and you must communicate what
you want. You must have an intimate knowledge of your food
that you are working with and those processes required to
prepare the food. Your job is to create an image that will
cause the viewer to salivate and respond. You are delivering
the "feast for the eye" image.
It is rare that you find this
combination but when you do, you will be very happy with the
end result. Starrshots Studios' owner and master photographer
has been heavily involved in the food service industry for
the last 25 years. He has owned and operated fast food operations
and Fine Dining Restaurants. One of the unique operations,
which has given him a tremendous insight into food presentation
that appeals to the customer, was his bakery operation. The
bakery operation specialized in Italian breads and pastries.
The operation included a retail delicatessen, an over the
counter pastry operation and a wholesale division which from
the very start only catered to food operations which had a
verifiable three to five-star rating. The first priority is
that all of the products must have the ability to feed the
eye. If you have ever been around or worked in food service
to the public, you will understand the concept of feeding
the eye.
